Heckler Koch’s HK45 is the improved, upgraded version of it’s predecessor, HK USP45. The new version, HK45 ACP features several user-inspired enhancements including changeable grip panels, a Picatinny MIL-STD 1913 accessory rail, improved ergonomics and additional ambidextrous controls. Motivation for the new model was that it would be a candidate for the Joint Combat Pistol (JCP) and Combat Pistol (CP), U.S. Military programs. The search was on for a replacement for the 9 mm M9. The programs were suspended prior to completion and no pistols were chosen.
The HK45 uses an HK proprietary O-ring barrel to ensure precise barrel-to-slide lockup and optimal accuracy. Superior performance is guaranteed from the HK45 barrels that are machined with the HK Cold-Hammer Forging process. HK’s unique internal mechanical recoil reduction system reduces the recoil forces to the weapon, and the shooter, by as much as 30%. This improves shooter control during rapid firing and increases component service life. Capable of firing standard .45ACP ball through +P ammunition, the HK45 combines the accuracy, modularity and delivers a minimum of 20,000 rounds. All HK 45 models can be fitted with threaded barrels for use with muzzle mounted suppressors.
Improving the HK45’s USP-style control lever, and adding a combination safety and de-cocking lever, that is frame mounted and quickly accessibly, gives the control lever a positive stop and it returns to the “fire” position after de-cocking. Left and right mounted control levers provide safety and/or de-cocking function by simply changing parts. For true ambidextrous use, a control lever can be mounted on both sides of the pistol.
Every HK45 is suitable for personal defense. Variants are offered with different trigger firing modes, including double action/single action (DA/SA) and DAO (double action only). The DAO mode uses the unique Heckler & Koch LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) firing system for improved double action trigger pull. Standard features include an extra backstrap, medium and small, to ensure optimal fit for most shooter’s hands and give an ergonomic grip. Heckler & Koch offers the identical weapon in a compact size. The HK45 Compact is smaller overall with a slim-line grip profile.
