SureFire was created in 1969 when Dr. John Matthews harnessed the power of laser technology for industrial applications. His corporation became a leader in the field over the next 10 years as he pioneered a host of industrial uses for the laser. Deciding to merge his love for firearms with his expertise in laser technology, Dr. Matthews began experimenting with weapon mounted lasers. Quickly realizing the potential, he decided to devote his life to the pursuit of tactical solutions, geared toward military and law enforcement use. The first commercial laser sight for use on a firearm was created in 1979 and SureFire was born.

The very first Surefire laser sighting system, the LPC Model 7, was mounted to a Colt Trooper .357 Magnum revolver and sold as a complete laser-aimed weapon. It was powered by a huge battery built into the gun’s custom Pachmayr grip. Although the LPC Model 7 was a crude representation, the laser team continued to evolve and perfect its products. Many were integrated with numerous weapons including the Remington 870 shotgun, Ruger Mini-14 and AC556 rifles along with the popular Colt M16.

Slow to catch on to the benefits, the firearms industry fianlly took note thanks to two events in 1984 that brought laser products to the forefront. The first was the request of the Los Angeles Police Department’s SWAT team to use during the 1984 Summer Olympics and the second was when SureFire's sighting tools were featured in the critically acclaimed sci-fi film, The Terminator, starring Arnold Swarzenegger. Since that time, SureFire has grown on its own merits, thanks to the introduction of the game-changing Model 7LSM (Model L70) that replaced the bulky, helium neon gas laser, with the first compact solid-state laser. Today, SureFire is the leading force behind laser aiming technology and continues to be the standard by which all others are judged.
