The HK USP 40 (Universal Self-loading Pistol) was originally designed for the American market and is now accepted internationally an accurate and reliable firearm. HK’s USP 40 controls are influenced by the Government Model 1911 pistol. A USP control, a combination safety and de-cocking lever, is quickly accessible and frame mounted unlike slide-mounted safeties.

Every HK USP 40 uses a modified Browning-type action and the USP recoil reduction system lowers recoil forces felt by the shooter and it also reduces recoil effects on the pistol components. Developed for the U.S. Special Operations System, this same recoil reduction system was tested and proven in the Mark 23 pistol. Insensitive to ammunition types, the USP recoil reduction system requires no special adjustment or maintenance. HK's modular design on the USP 40 and its internal components allow the ambidextrous function of the control lever. Conversion from one trigger firing mode to another is possible on each HK USP 40, this includes combination double-action and single action (DA/SA) and double action only (DAO) modes. HK offers the USP 40 in the V1 DA/SA model and also the V7 LEM model, both are available with either two 13 round or two 10 round magazines.
