SureFire was created in 1969 when Dr. John Matthews harnessed the power of laser technology for industrial applications. His corporation became a leader in the field over the next 10 years as he pioneered a host of industrial uses for the laser. Deciding to merge his love for firearms with his expertise in laser technology, Dr. Matthews began experimenting with weapon mounted lasers. Quickly realizing the potential, he decided to devote his life to the pursuit of tactical solutions, geared toward military and law enforcement use. The first commercial laser sight for use on a firearm was created in 1979 and SureFire was born.

It didn’t take long for SureFire to morph into a complete firearm accessory company. The laser technology that created this company has advanced 100-fold over the past 60 years, but it took SureFire to advance suppressor technology. Virtually unchanged for almost a century, the original suppressor was the creation of Sir Hiram Steven Maxim, who invented the first production recoil-operated machine gun. His basic design lasted for 93 years before SureFire created its Suppressor Division on 2002. Since then, the suppressor technology, materials and construction has been refined and redefined.

Not wanting to merely offer a ‘new’ SureFire product, the object was to advance the state-of-the-art, which was accomplished in a big way. Extremely ambitious goals were set for the next generation of suppressors. They had to not only reduce muzzle sound, but also muzzle flash and muzzle blast signature. All of these can reveal one’s position to an enemy. When the goals were met, SureFire submitted its suppressor to the United States Special Operation Command (SOCOM) and, when put to the test, it stood up against the most brutal performance and durability standards. At the end of the day, SureFire earned the trust of the US Military, beating out all other suppressor brands, and earning the rights to wear the name SOCOM, plus the honor of supplying the armed forces of the greatest nation in the world. That agreement continues to this day!
